Galvanized Supply Pipe and Weak Water Pressure
In older housing the pipe itself becomes the restriction. It happens slowly, which is why people often do not notice until a neighbor's house feels stronger.

Galvanized steel was the residential supply standard through the middle of the last century and had largely disappeared from new construction by the 1980s. The zinc coating that protects it eventually goes, and the steel underneath rusts inward. The bore closes, and a line built to carry a certain flow carries steadily less.
How to tell if you have it
Find where the supply enters the property and look at the pipe. Galvanized is dull gray, magnetic, and usually joined with threaded fittings rather than soldered ones. Copper is unmistakably copper-colored and is soldered. Plastic is obvious. A magnet is the quickest test: it sticks to galvanized steel and does not stick to copper.
What the symptoms look like
- Loss is gradual over years rather than sudden.
- It is worse at the fixtures furthest from where the water comes in.
- Hot can be worse than cold, because the heater adds another length of old pipe.
- Flow may briefly worsen after work elsewhere disturbs the line.
A common confusion worth clearing up
Water systems had to submit service-line inventories to the EPA by 16 October 2024, using four categories: lead, non-lead, galvanized requiring replacement, and unknown. That third category does not mean "all galvanized pipe" — the EPA defines it as a galvanized line that is, or ever was, downstream of a lead service line. So a utility inventory showing no galvanized-requiring-replacement lines in your area does not mean there is no galvanized pipe in your house.

What can be done
Sections can be replaced, or the whole supply repiped in copper or PEX. Which makes sense depends on how much of the original is left and how accessible it is — that is a judgement someone needs to make on site, not something to decide from a web page.
